Pin It Now!

Hello hello!

This post is not a return to blogging (at least not on here — more on that below), but I thought it only right that I share with you all that we adopted a little boy last month. His name is Gregory and he's five weeks old. We activated with our adoption agency late last May and got a call a little more than seven months later, right after New Year's, that we'd been chosen to parent a little boy who'd just been born. We got on a flight at 6am the next morning and made it to the hospital before he was 24 hours old.

It's been a joy to add him to our family, and our community here on campus has been wonderfully supportive. It's definitely been an adjustment, but somehow not as much as I thought it would be. He's easygoing and sweet and fits well into our routine, letting us carry him around campus in a sling to have meals in the dining hall and go to Mass. We had people over to play games not too long ago, and he mostly slept while he got passed around from person to person. At five weeks now, he's becoming more aware of the world, and his favorite activity is looking out (at?) the window.

It's also been great to see how the foundation that Mike and I have built in our relationship has translated to parenthood. We have found ways to split the caretaking, so Mike (who was a night owl anyway) does the night bottle feedings and diaper changes starting at 9 p.m. so I can go to bed, and then I get up at 6 a.m. to take over. We take turns carrying Gregory in the sling to meals. Mike is fantastic with young children but had prior little experience with infants, so I taught him to do a lot of things in the first week or so, and now he's learned he can Google most questions he has.

Gregory starts daycare part time next week, and I go back to work at the beginning of March, and that will bring with it a new set of adjustments (particularly for Mike, who will be home with him on Thursdays and Fridays). But after this first month or so I'm feeling confident about our ability to make things work. Also, our employer lifted the age limit (previously age 2) on children in the residence halls, so now we have more flexibility in figuring out when we will be ready to move on.

I have no plans to do mommy blogging, and I'm leaving this blog behind for good, but I did miss writing about books and reading, so not too long ago I started A Cocoon of Books. You are welcome to join me over there to talk literary matters and get book recommendations!

I hope life is treating you well, and I wish you all the best. Thanks for letting me pop in to share my good news!

God bless,

  1. Congratulations!!! I'm so happy for you guys :)

  2. Congratulations! So happy to hear your good news. Gregory is one of my favorite names for a boy, too. Best wishes to your family!

  3. Congratulations! I'm glad it's going so smoothly so far. Gregory is a very nice name and not too popular these days but not too dated-sounding either.

I'm excited to know about your new blog and look forward to reading all of it! In a quick look around, I didn't see how to subscribe by RSS; is that an option?

    1. It's a Blogger blog, so there's definitely a feed associated. I only ever copy/paste URLs into my feed readers to add them, but I'll find an RSS widget to throw on there for you!
